Shockwave Therapy

Still Dealing With That Nagging Heel, Tendon, or Joint Pain?

Tired of the same ache that stretching, rest, and ice never quite fix?

If you have a stubborn tendon or muscle problem that just keeps hanging around, there is a new option in Lafayette, LA that could change the way you recover.

It is a non-invasive regenerative therapy called shockwave therapy. It uses targeted acoustic pressure waves to reach deep into the painful tissue and wake up your body’s own healing response. No needles. No injections. No surgery. No downtime.

Shockwave therapy has been used across Europe for years with growing research behind it, and it is now available right here at Boulet Physical Therapy. When it is combined with the hands-on care and movement-based treatment we are known for, many of our patients find relief from pain that nothing else seemed to touch.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

When a tendon or muscle has been painful for months, the problem is usually not that it is still injured. It is that the tissue has gotten stuck. Blood flow to the area is poor, the healing process has stalled, and the body has quietly stopped trying to repair it.

Shockwave therapy is designed to restart that process.
Using a handheld device, Dr. Taylor Fontenot PT, DPT, OCS applies a series of acoustic pressure waves directly to the painful area. Those waves travel into the tissue and create a controlled stimulus that your body reads as a signal to get back to work. The response includes:

• Increased blood flow to the treated area
• A boost in the body’s natural repair and regeneration activity
• A reduction in pain sensitivity in the surrounding nerves
• Breakdown of stubborn calcification and scar tissue in some tendons

In simple terms, shockwave therapy gives tired, stalled tissue the kick it needs to start healing again, the natural way. There is nothing injected and nothing removed. Your body does the healing. The treatment just gets it started.

A session typically takes only a few minutes, and most patients walk out and carry on with their day.

Can shockwave therapy help me?

Shockwave therapy is at its best with conditions that involve tendons, fascia, and muscle, especially the ones that have become chronic and have not responded well to rest, stretching, or other treatments.

At our practice, we do not use it as a stand-alone fix. We pair it with the hands-on care and movement-based treatment that address why the problem started in the first place. That combination is where we see our patients get the best results.

Some of the conditions shockwave therapy is commonly used for include:

  • Hip pain from the outer hip (gluteal tendinopathy)
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Chronic muscle tension and trigger points
  • Scar tissue and stubborn soft-tissue restrictions

Does Shockwave Therapy Hurt?

The name sounds more dramatic than the treatment feels. Most patients describe it as a firm, rapid tapping or pulsing sensation over the sore spot. If the area is already tender, you may feel some discomfort during the session, but the intensity is adjusted to what you can comfortably tolerate, and each treatment only lasts a few minutes.

Some patients notice mild soreness or redness in the area for a day or two afterward. That is a normal sign that the tissue is responding, and it usually settles on its own. You can go back to your normal activities straight away, and there is no need for time off work or training.

What to expect at your appointment

1. A proper assessment first. Before any treatment, we will examine the painful area, look at how you move, and talk through how long the problem has been going on. Shockwave therapy is only recommended when it is the right tool for your condition.

2. A short, targeted treatment. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and the handheld device delivers the acoustic waves to the exact spot that needs it. Most sessions take around 5 to 10 minutes.

3. A plan to keep you improving. Shockwave therapy works best as part of a complete plan. Alongside your sessions, you will get hands-on care and targeted exercises to rebuild strength and stop the problem coming back.

4. A series, not a one-off. Most conditions respond best to a short course of treatments, typically 3 to 6 sessions spaced about a week apart. Many patients start to notice a difference within the first few sessions, with improvement continuing in the weeks after the course finishes as the tissue repairs.

Why shockwave therapy at Boulet Physical Therapy?

Shockwave therapy has been a go-to treatment in Europe for years, and the research supporting it keeps growing. It is only now becoming more widely available in the United States, and we are proud to offer it to the Lafayette community.

What makes the difference is not the device on its own. It is who is holding it and what happens around it.

Honest advice. If we do not think shockwave therapy is right for you, we will tell you and point you toward what is.

Expert hands. Every session is delivered by our team of clinical specialists who know exactly where the problem is and how to target it.

A complete plan, not a quick fix. Shockwave therapy is one tool in a bigger toolbox that includes manual therapy, dry needling, cupping, and therapeutic exercise. We use whatever combination gets you back to what you love.

A natural, non-invasive approach. No medication, no injections, no surgery. The goal is to help your body heal itself and stay that way.

Shockwave Therapy FAQs

Is shockwave therapy safe?

Yes. It is a non-invasive treatment with a long track record of use and a low risk of side effects. The most common after-effects are mild soreness or redness over the treated area, which usually clears within a day or two. We will go through your health history first to make sure it is appropriate for you.

Is it the same as the shockwave used for kidney stones?

It uses the same basic principle of acoustic waves, but at a much lower energy level and for a completely different purpose. The version we use is designed for muscles, tendons, and soft tissue.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients need a short course of 3 to 6 sessions, usually about a week apart. We will give you a clear recommendation after your assessment.

How soon will I feel a difference?

Everyone responds a little differently. Some patients notice a change after the first session or two, while for others the improvement builds more gradually over the course and in the weeks that follow as the tissue repairs.

Can I exercise after a session?

In most cases, yes. We may ask you to avoid high-intensity loading of the treated area for a day or so, but there is no need for rest or time off. We will give you specific guidance based on your condition.

Who should not have shockwave therapy?

It is not suitable for everyone. We take extra care, or may recommend an alternative, if you are pregnant, have a blood clotting disorder or take blood thinners, have had a steroid injection in the area recently, or have certain other medical conditions. We will talk all of this through with you before any treatment.

Does insurance cover shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is offered as an advanced cash-pay service and is generally not covered by insurance. This means no waiting for insurance approval, fewer restrictions, and more control over your care. You and your physical therapist can choose the treatment that best fits your needs and recovery goals.
